Would you like to make yourself a bed for your pet? Here is an idea

Save big pillows you own, old tablecloth or sheets and fill them with fiberfill.Make a cover with a zipper, that way you can replace it or clean it. If you get all the materials from old cloth, pillows and sheets this will be very economical and it will only take you a few hours to accomplish. Happy Sewing!

Use Old Linens for Pets

I use old blankets, and a carpet for the floor so my dogs will be warm in their house in very cold days in the winter.

My friend heard from her vet that if you feed your dog Kibbles 'n Bits as a treat, they will really like them and also get food that is good for them. I tried this and my dogs Daisy and Cody just love this treat.

What is a hot spot?

Hot spot is a common skin problem. They should be checked and treated. Dogs suffer a lot with this kind of problem. A hot spot is a skin inflammation and infection that could be superficial or deep. Common skin lesions are caused by licking, biting, or scratching. It's important to find out the cause taking your dog to the veterinarian.

Usually there is hair loss present. If you notice redness or oozing, or pain these are symptoms of this problem. Also check for fleas and other insects.

Sometimes we don't know what to do when our pets are sick and can't tell us what is happening to them. If they are alert there is nothing to be worry about. If they ate something that did not agree with their intestines it's better to make them fast for a few hours and later give them a bland diet. Here is a great recipe from Placervillevet.com

"Bland diet for vomiting dogs
Mix one and a half cups of cooked white rice with one half cup of cooked chicken or turkey meat (no grease, no skin). Boiled or baked potato may be substituted for the rice".

Here is another recipe for diarrhea

"Bland diet for dogs with diarrhea:

Mix one and a half cups of cooked white rice or potato with one half cup of cottage cheese. Remove the liquid from cottage cheese by squeezing it between several layers of paper towel".

I know that when dogs or cats are not feeling well, they like to eat grass and don't want to eat their food. I have two dogs and a cat.

Hope this help. Obviously your dog can get dehydrated if they are having diarrhea and or vomiting for more than a day. If your dog seems to be despondent then please take him or her to the vet.

Probably most of you know that the Australian Shepherd are not from Australia. There has been many rumors that "they are probably a remnant of the lost continent of Atlantis". Aussies as they call them in Australia were first introduced from the Basque region in the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France, just as the Great Pyrenee dog. These colorful little dogs have been used for herding cattle and they are very popular in the United States. They are good dogs, very loving and protective. They learn very fast, and they do what the master says. Another characteristic is that they are territorial, they do have a very strong sense of boundaries and they protect their family from intruders. Another quality they have is they are high-energy dogs. They need to exercise, and want to be with their owners, spend time with them, teach them tricks or play with them.

I have so much to say about Aussies because I have a male and a female. I will probably continue talking about them. I hope you plan about purchasing an Aussie and learn a lot about them. They are fun to have around. I love my Aussies, they are wonderful dogs!

How to Keep your dog's coat silky

Washing a dog periodically can keep his or her coat silky and shining. I have two Australian Shepherd dogs male and female. Cody the male dog's coat is more difficult to keep silky than Daisy the female girl. Bath is important, nutrition,enough protein in their diet. As you know the Aussie or Australian Shepherd dog's coat is medium to long in length and it has beautiful combination of colors from white, black, beige, including the rare blue merle. I have learned through a difficult process that my dogs don't like to bath but I do it in such a way that they accept it. It's important to wash them often but keep in mind that Shampooing the dog too often can result in the coat being stripped of the natural oils it has to keep it shiny and healthy. I will have more ideas on how to keep your dog looking beautiful.

Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
Beefy Doggie Cookies

2 6-once jars of beef-and-vegetable baby food
1 cup of wheat germ
2 cups of nonfat dry milk

Preheat your oven to 350Ÿ. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl with a fork. Drop by small spoonfuls onto a greased pan. You can flatten slightly or you can cut into fun shapes such as bones, paws, ect. Bake for 12-15 minutes until slightly brown at the edges. Let cool. Store in fridge for up to one week. Give to your pooch and let them enjoy!

Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
Birthday Cake for Pups

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup soft butter
1/2 cup corn oil
1 jar baby food, meat, beef, strained
4 eggs
2 strips beef jerky -- (2 to 3)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour an 8x5x3 inch loaf pan. Cream butter until smooth. Add corn oil, baby food, and eggs. Mix until smooth.

Mix dry ingredients into beef mixture until batter is smooth. Crumble beef jerky and fold into batter. Pour batter into loaf pan. Bake 1 hour and 10 minutes. cool on wire rack 15 minutes. Ice with plain yogurt or cottage cheese.

Store uneaten cake in refrigerator.

Homemade Dog Treat Recipe
Dog Cookies with Chicken Broth

Ingredients:
2 cups whole wheat flour
2/3 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup sunflower seeds -- shelled
2 tablespoons corn oil
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 eggs
1/4 cup low-fat milk
1 egg -- beaten

Instructions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together flour, cornmeal and seeds. Add oil, broth and egg mixture. The dough should be firm. Let sit 15-20 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut into shapes and brush with beaten egg. Bake for 25-35 minutes, until golden brown. Remove and cool. Store in airtight container.

The Complete Healthy Dog Handbook by Betsy Brevitz is an excellent resource for pet owners. The beginning covers basics of dog ownership and temperament testing. She gives guidelines for both puppies and older dogs. I'm familiar with the puppy temperament testing from other books, but was glad to see a section for older dogs. She also breaks down the common complaints to most breeds. It is more extensive than what I've seen on the web, and should help prepare owners for possibilities, although, some of the conditions I would think would be rather rare in well bred dogs. The majority of the book covers basic health problems and care. Set up in a question answer format Dr. Brevitz explains in laymen's terms the various medical conditions. The first of each chapter gives an outline of what would be a major emergency and what can wait. This section alone could probably save pet owners considerable money at emergency vet clinics. The last couple of chapters deal with poison control and first aid. I would have liked this section to be a bit more extensive. The basic are there, but in parts seems superficial. The illustrations are the weakness in this book. Actual pictures would give a better understanding than simple drawings. Overall, I recommend this book for any dog owners library.

It is divided into nineteen easy-to-use chapters where all the major dog care topics are discussed. General advice on dog care is provided - such as how to select a healthy puppy or deal with an aging dog or what kind of foods most dogs need - and specific medical problems are explained in an easy to comprehend style. The index is simple and easy to use: I looked up 'scooting' and quickly found the possible causes and treatment for my Aussie Terrier's latest behavior.
This is a reliable, clearly written, inclusive book that would fit well in all conscientious dog owners' libraries.
